EUREKA, Ill. -- The Sabercats were much more productive at the plate this time around at Eureka, but ultimately couldn't overcome the Red Devils, falling 6-11 and 3-11 in a Thursday doubleheader.
Maranatha logged a season-best 12 hits in the opening game of the day, and Cameron Curcuro and Don Wheeler led the way, boasting 3 and 4 hits on the day, respectively. STORY
The Sabercats exploded in the top of the first inning, scoring 6 runs off of 7 hits. Teddy Haugen's double seemed to be a spark that started the fire, then RBI singles from Don Wheeler and Tim Nickels were followed by an RBI double from Curcuro, who logged his second hit of the inning. Right away, the Sabercats were on a rampage.
The Red Devils converted 2 hits into 4 runs in the bottom of the second to play themselves right back into the game, taking the lead and control of the game in the third by running the score up to 10-6. Maranatha was steadily adding hits to their total for a high-scoring game. The Red Devils added a final run in the fifth to cap off the scoring, rendering the Sabercats' first-inning rally ultimately irrelevant.
Wheeler and Curcuro wielded the most damage in the first game, recording three hits apiece.
The fourth inning was the kicker in the second game. The Red Devils pushed 8 runs across the plate to make it a 10-0 game. Heads-up baserunning from Curcuro allowed him to score from second base in the top of the fifth, as he stole third before coming home off an error from the Eureka catcher, then a three-hit seventh inning was capped off by a 2-RBI double from Jonathan Jeske, who continues to impress as a college rookie. Jeske's hit was the final highlight of the day for the Sabercats, who left Henry Sand Field encouraged with the progress, but ultimately winless in the four-game series this week.
