FULTON, Mo. -- The Sabercats reached 25 points in a set for the first time this season, but still ultimately came away winless at a competitive Westminster College Tri in a three-match weekend.
The Sabercats took two losses to the Blue Jays of Westminster College and a straight-set loss to Simpson College in the weekend, staying competitive with no fewer than 14 points in a given set. Maranatha gave the Blue Jays a run for their money in the final set of the Friday matchup, as late kills from Tyler Bellrichard, Caleb Goetz, Josiah Scott, and Isaiah Johnson helped force the set into a tie, but the Blue Jays had an answer through Noah Naumann, who provided two late kills for the hosts to clinch the match in a dramatic final set.
The Sabercats returned on Saturday for a rematch with Westminster, and even in another straight-set loss, the Sabercats looked to be taking steps in the right direction. Isaiah Johnson put up a season-high kills (8) and points (14) in the match, and the Sabercats once again got to 20 points in the third frame. But a late run from the Blue Jays held the Sabercats off, as the hosts closed out another exciting match with crucial kills to seal the deal inside the Westminster Gymnasium.
