Mount Mary Earns Win Over Sabercats at the Line

Maranatha fell 41-60 to Mount Mary, in first game of the New Year.

MILWAUKEE, Wis. -- While finishing only 29.4 percent from the field, Mount Mary was able to overcome their sub par shooting day by beating Maranatha out at the free-throw line.

A stat category that the Sabercats have seemed to struggle with this season, they finished only 5-13 from the line, while their opponents finished 14-21, directly determining the 60-49 Mount Mary victory.

STORY

Maranatha came out strong defensively, getting stops and keeping Mount Mary at just 4-points through the first 6 minutes of play. But they failed to take advantage of this early go ahead opportunity, turning the ball over in eight of their first ten possessions.

While they only trailed 9-15 at the end of the first, the second quarter is where things quickly got out of hand. Mount Mary immediately started things off with a mid-range jumper, just 4 seconds into the quarter.

Kyria Teachout and Chloe Steuerwald both answered back for the Sabercats, trying to keep the deficit in single-digits. But the Blue Angels found some spark from beyond the arc, and three 3-pointers later, Maranatha found themselves entering halftime down 17-34.

The Sabercats' spirits were lifted in the second half after freshman Anna Alsup went on a run, scoring back-to-back-to-back layups. She finished the game with her career-high of 9-points.

Maranatha worked hard in the final minutes, pulling off a 26-24 (MMU) second half score. Put this hard work couldn't fix what was already broken in the first half, and Mount Mary finished with a 60-49 victory.

Despite the loss, Lindsay Mikkelson had a solid performance from all over the court, leading her team with 13 points and also grabbing 5 rebounds.
